Rotork Actuators  to upgrade actuation technology in Kolkata airport

An aviation fuel station at a major Indian airport has been enhanced with the installation of intelligent electric actuators from Rotork. Kolkata airport,  Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (NSCBIA)  wished to upgrade to the latest in intelligent actuation technology,  It is the fifth busiest in the whole of India and annually handles approximately 9 million passengers. It was expanded in 2013 by the addition of a new terminal. Aviation fuel is collected from nearby Haldia Refinery by tanker and delivered to NSCBIA airport. Over 30 IQ intelligent multi-turn electric actuators have been ordered for installation at an aviation fuel station at the airport. They are replacing existing K-range Rotork actuators that operate gate valves; around half the ordered actuators have now been installed at the storage tanks at the station.
The customer wished to upgrade to IQ3 actuators to access the features and benefits they offer, such as access to operational data through the integrated data logger.  The customer requested that the replacement actuators were electric, to avoid unnecessary changes to power supplies and existing set-up.
Local engineers demonstrated the features of IQ3 actuators to Indian Oil Corporation Limited (who run the aviation fuel network at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Airport), highlighting operational accuracy, data logging functions and power supply options, including the ability to install without a power supply.
The customer has signed up to a service agreement as part of Rotork’s Lifetime Management programme, ensuring ongoing service support and reduced downtime for maintenance activities through Heath Checks and periodic maintenance.

Intelligent Electric Actuators At South Korean Chemical Plant

Over a 100 multi-turn and part-turn intelligent electric actuators have been installed at a new petrochemical site in Daesan, South Korea. The IQ actuators will provide flow control at the plant which produces ethylene, polyethylene and propylene.  The new facility will produce 750,000 tons of ethylene, 750,000 tonnes of polyethylene and 400,000 tons of propylene per year. These chemicals are widely used to make plastic and synthetic rubber which in turn make automotive parts and other industrial materials such as packaging and pipes. The actuators have been installed in the cracking units in the plant to control the flow of the oil that is the feedstock at the heart of the production process. They operate ball, gate, globe and butterfly valves.
The Rotork Master Station provides a local centre for monitoring and controlling flow control assets. It is a control interface for Pakscan network loops, capable of operating up to 240 actuators across three separate field networks. The actuators will be linked by Rotork’s leading Pakscan™ network bus system and connected via a Rotork Master Station installed in the control room, operating two independent loops.

Rotork actuators for  Wessex Water UK  to upgrade multi-million project

Supporting UN Sustainable Development Goal 6, Clean Water and Sanitation, and keeping the world flowing for future generations. Intelligent electric actuators have been ordered by Wessex Water to support a £50 million project to reconstruct the Durleigh Water Treatment Centre, which provides drinking water to over 40,000 UK residents. This is part of a framework agreement between Rotork and Wessex Water.
Durleigh Water Treatment Centre in Somerset is Wessex Water’s second largest surface water treatment works. It treats raw water from the Durleigh reservoir and Bridgewater and Taunton canal, but in recent years the condition of the site has deteriorated. This prompted a renewal project that will improve the treatment process and the water that is produced.
Over 200 Rotork IQ multi-turn and part-turn operated actuated valves (some with IW Mk2 gearboxes) have been installed on almost all processes on the site. IQ3 actuators operate a wide range of valves, including butterfly valves that control the flow of raw water through a new main treatment building, inlet valves as the water enters from the reservoir and applications within the main treatment building such as Dissolved Air Flotation, Rapid Gravity Filters and Granular Activated Carbon Filters.
They also operate valves within the second building on site (known as the “Low Lift Pumping Area”), a building that treats wastewater from the process, and a chemical building where final processes (including ultraviolet treatment) are undergone. A small number of compact, electric ROM actuators were also installed to provide simple on/off control within the main treatment building.
IQ3 actuators are ideally suited to water applications because of their water ingress protection; they are double-sealed to IP66/68. Internal electrics are protected from the ambient environment for the full life of the actuator, even when the terminal cover is removed. Real time valve and actuator performance is viewable on the LCD display. Rotork application teams produced the designs and drawings for all the machined components that were required to carry out the valve automation.
